2021 Cave de Ribeauville, Riesling Collection Vendanges Manuelles
Regular price £20.30 Save £-20.30Created in 1895 by wine-growers from the town of Ribeauvillé, the Cave de Ribeauvillé - the oldest such cooperative in France - is something of a pioneer in Alsace. Its members own portions of some of the finest vineyards in the region, and their plots contribute to their exceptional range of wines. The Collection range aims to represent the classic Alsace grape varieties in wines which are flavourful and versatile, each with its own individual personality.
TASTING NOTES
Often called the 'king of Alsace', Riesling is the most respected grape variety in this region. Distinctive and harmonious aromas of lime and grapefruit give way to a lean minerality and a long, beautiful persistent finish. The wine retains just enough residual sugar to balance the bracing acidity and provide a very pleasant drinking experience.
FOOD PAIRING
Beautiful with seafood, appetisers with crudités and canapé; or on its own, paired with friends on a warm summer day.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The Cave de Ribeauvillé maintains a quality charter with its growers to ensure low yields and hand-picked grapes, giving winemaker Evelyne Dondelinger only the very finest fruit to work with.
2021 Judeka, Etna Rosso DOC
Regular price £20.50 Save £-20.50ABOUT THE WINE
Judeka is a young winery producing excellent wines in the heart of Sicily. For owners Cesare and Valentina, wine is a passion they have had since childhood, when their grandparents used to press grapes at home, in a garage. They use organic techniques to produce exceptional wines.
Made from very fine Nerello Mascalese and Nerello Cappuccio from low yielding vineyards, both young and old. The grapes are macerated until the end of fermentation. The wine then continues its life in wood until bottled roughly one year after harvest.
TASTING NOTES
Rich dark fruit flavors, hints of chocolate, and a touch of Mediterranean herbs. Drunk young it is a distinguished wine. Fresh, fragrant, beautifully slender and with a fine grip, it has a natural polish and stage presence. And, in aging it gathers richness and complexity.
2021 Tar & Roses, Pinot Grigio Central Victoria
Regular price £20.60 Save £-20.60Born into a grape-growing family, Don Lewis spent 32 years working for the Mitchelton winery in Heathcote, where he forged an enduring partnership with Narelle King. In 2004 Don left Mitchelton to work as a consultant, most notably in Priorat, Spain. His time in Europe cultivated his fascination with the wines of Italy and Spain, and in 2006 he and Narelle set up Tar and Roses in order to show how these varietals could be grown in the diverse terroirs of Central Victoria.
TASTING NOTES
Sourced from three main vineyards providing delightful cool-climate, fresh peach and pear flavours, with hints of tropical fruit flavours. The wine sees a short period of skin-contact, giving it a delicate pink hue and a subtle, spicy edge. A complex yet soft and easy drinking wine.
FOOD PAIRING
Great with calamari, or with nutty salads – a wonderful alternative to rose…
FRIARWOOD SAYS
A million miles from the dull, flavourless standard of most Pinot Grigio wines, this is a delightfully balanced, superbly enjoyable expression of this grape variety.
2016 Vega Caledonia, Rioja Reserva
Regular price £20.90 Save £-20.90ABOUT THE WINE
Part of the ambitious Bodegas Najerilla, established in 1975, is located in High Rioja in Bajo Najerilla Valley. With some vineyards over 50 years old, the winery produces grapes of excellent quality thanks to their strict selection and consistent quality control techniques. Thanks to three generations of committed winemakers, their fine wines are highly recognized in Spain for their authentic flavour profiles and for honouring the historic region.
TASTE NOTES
Ruby red in the glass with subtle vanilla notes on the nose, thanks to the 24 months of ageing in American oak. The palate shows beautiful complexity and structure, with layers of dark fruit, cocoa and a touch of oak. The finish is long and elegant. Great value for quality in this Reserva!
FOOD PAIRING
Very flexible style to pair with a range of meat-focused dishes. From robust tapas containing chorizo to venison stew and beef tenderloin.
2021 Capanna, Moscadello di Montalcino
Regular price £21.10 Save £-21.10The Capanna farm, owned by the Cencioni family since 1957, is situated in the Montosoli area, to the north of Montalcino. It was founded by Giuseppe Cencioni and his sons, Benito and Franco, and was one of the first estates to form part of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation. The family still manages both viticulture and winemaking on the estate. Their approach is very classic, with structured, powerful reds and intense, complex whites in a traditional, sweet style.
TASTING NOTES
Bright, floral aromas, full of ripe fruit. Apricot, raisin and white peach characterise the subtly off-dry, beautifully balanced palate. Elegant and complex, an excellent example of the style.
FOOD PAIRING
Good with soft cheese or delicate pastries; nothing too sweet, as the wine should always be sweeter than the dish.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
An unusual wine, given the fame of, and demand for, the red Brunello wines from this region; white vineyards are often replanted to Sangiovese, making wines like this increasingly rare, especially on export markets like the UK.
2015 Chateau Potensac, Chapelle de Potensac
Regular price £21.20 Save £-21.20ABOUT THE WINE
Chateau Potensac is named for its location on top of the Potensac plateau. Owned by the Delon Family the estate is planted with an unusually high proportion of Merlot for the area, the aim being to produce a softer, more approachable wine. This is the second wine of the estate, made by the same team as Leoville Las Cases.
TASTING NOTES
An attractive, medium-bodied wine for early-drinking. Red cherry and plum fruit, with a hint of mint and dark spice.
FOOD PAIRING
Robust dishes; winter stews and game.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Excellent value from a very drinkable Bordeaux.
2020 Domaine Philippe Charmond Macon-Vergisson 'Sur la Roche'
Regular price £21.50 Save £-21.50Winemaking has been a tradition in the Charmond family for three generations, starting in 1950 with only few acres. Today, Philippe Charmond owns and cultivates 8ha in the villages of "Vergisson", Davayé and Prissé. This terroir of the region is ideal for grape growing, with vines situated on south-east-facing slopes to catch the sun. This Macon-Vergisson is vinified 70% in stainless steel vats and 30% in oak barrels; annual production is only 3000 bottles.
TASTING NOTES
The colour is a lustrous pale gold. A subtle nose mixes toasty aromas with dried fruits and white flowers and a refreshingly maritime minerality. On the palate the wine is rich and ripe yet retaining a freshness and an underlying gentle salinity. Notes of freshly churned butter to finish with creamy undertones of fresh hazelnut.
FOOD PAIRING
Pair with finger-food like mozzarella sticks or falafel. Also a great match with white fish.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Astonishingly good value, with beautiful complexity and a long, graceful finish.
2022 Whispering Angel Provence Rose, Chateau D'Esclans
Regular price £21.50 Save £-21.50ABOUT THE WINE
Château d’Esclans is located on an exceptional site, on elevated land near the Gorges de Pennafort, twenty-five kilometers northwest of the ancient Roman city of Frejus on the Mediterranean coast. Some 3.2 million bottles of Whispering Angel were sold in over 100 countries around the world in 2016; and the brand has gone from strength to strength since. More astonishing is the fact that, despite the huge volumes produced, with grapes sourced from growers throughout Provence, the quality remains undimmed.
TASTING NOTES
Harvested during the serene Provençal dawns, meticulously de-stemmed and fermented exclusively in stainless steel. Temperature regulated to prevent oxidation. 'Bâtonnage' (the agitation of the lees sediment in the tank) is performed bi-weekly to enhance the wine's velvety texture. Enticing aromas of delicate red berries, crisp and vibrant on the palate, with an elegantly refined mouthfeel.
FOOD PAIRING
Superb as a standalone aperitif, or with shrimp ceviche and artisanal bruschetta; ideal for a beachside gathering.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Through this label, the Cave d'Esclans has transformed Provençal rosé into a chic trendsetter.
2022 Domaine de la Croix Belle, Le Champ des Grillons Rose
Regular price £46.00 Save £-46.00In 1977 Jacques and Françoise Boyer began their project to build a top-quality wine estate on the slopes of the Cévennes, just north of Béziers in Languedoc. Existing vineyards were replanted, and the cellar underwent extensive modernisation. 110 hectares of vines planted with 16 different varieties produce a diverse range of wines offering excellent value for money at all quality levels.
TASTING NOTES
Floral aromas, with a hint of spice; subtle and elegant on the palate. Bright and easy to drink, perfect for a sunny day.
FOOD PAIRING
Best as an aperitif, but suitable for pairing with light finger-food or delicate seafood dishes.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The glamourous packaging has been crafted according to the idea that you ‘drink what you see’; hence the clear label and attractive bottle-design.
2018 Agriturismo Colognole, Chianti Rufina
Regular price £21.50 Save £-21.50In 1892, Conte Venceslao Spalletti, Senator to the Kingdom of Italy and owner of a fine agricultural estate in upper Emilia, purchased the Colognole and Lucciano (in Chianti Montalbano) estates. Colognole was initially utilised mainly for lumber production, thanks to its extensive forests, but in 1912, due to the interest shown from the Conte's sons, Giambattista and Cesar, production focused on grapevines and olive trees. This development led, in the 1930s, to the construction of the Cantine Spalletti in the city of Rufina. Production significantly increased both in quantity and quality, and in the 1960s the name Spalletti had become synonymous with high-quality Tuscan wine, particularly for age-worthy reds. In the 1980s, with the addition to the shareholders of a large sparkling-wine producer, the owner gave up both the production cellar and the name Spalletti and concentrated their efforts on the Colognole Estate.
TASTING NOTES
A medium body with a ruby red colour. Cherry fruit on the nose with darker fruit, light spice and earth on the palate, extremely smooth, and velvety tannins, and perfect acidity and well-balanced.
FOOD PAIRING
It goes particularly well with traditional Tuscan meat dishes, such as grilled lamb, pork ribs, stew, and antipasto.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
We love this Chianti, from an area that produces softer wines compared to the Classico counterpart.
2012 Chateau Grand Corbin
Regular price £21.60 Save £-21.60ABOUT THE WINE
Chateau Grand Corbin is one of the oldest estates in Saint-Emilion, dating back to the 15th century. The beautiful chateau was constructed in the 1800s. In the late 1990s, Anabelle Cruse and her sisters purchased the shares of Chateau Grand Corbin from the other family shareholders and took over complete ownership of the 15.5-hectare estate. In December 2010, the estate was purchased by the Groupe SMABTP, who combined it in 2012 with the vineyards of Chateau Haut Corbin and Chateau Le Jurat to form a new 24.5-hectare estate under the Grand Corbin name.
FOOD PAIRING
Perfect with meaty pasta dishes, or lamb meatball with tomato sauce.
2016 Chateau Potensac
Regular price £21.70 Save £-21.70Chateau Potensac is named for its location on top of the Potensac plateau. Owned by the Delon Family the estate is planted with an unusually high proportion of Merlot for the area, the aim being to produce a softer, more approachable wine. The wine is made by the same team as Leoville Las Cases, and aged for 14-16 months in old French oak barrels previously used for the Clos du Marquis.
TASTING NOTES
Earthy, structured wine, lifted by cassis fruit. Loam, wet leaves and tobacco flavours mingle with red fruit on the palate. Still very youthful.
FOOD PAIRING
Robust dishes; winter stews and game.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Excellent value; one for laying down until about 2021; it will improve until 2031.
2014 Chateau Brane Cantenac, Baron de Brane
Regular price £21.75 Save £-21.75Located west of the village of Cantenac in the Margaux appellation, this 2eme Cru Classe estate has seen significant improvement in the vineyards and winemaking since Henri Lurton took over management in the 1990s. The 75 hectares of vineyard remain virtually unchanged since the Classification in 1855, and the estate also boasts significant parkland and beautifully manicured gardens. 25% organic, with progress towards 100% planned, and 12 hectares dedicated to an experiment in biodynamic farming.
TASTING NOTES
Intense red fruits, accented by liquorice, menthol and caramel. Accessible and concentrated, with good balance and elegant tannic structure. Finishes with a lingering hint of chocolate.
FOOD PAIRING
Perfect for burgers; simple, fatty meat dishes suit the red-fruit character of this second wine.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Already accessible, but best from 2019 to 2024.
2022 Domaine Devillard, Le Renard Pinot Noir

TASTING NOTES
Red-berry aromas, with a hint of undergrowth. The palate is light, bright and savoury, quite restrained and elegant; a lovely easy-drinking style.

TASTING NOTES
Pale yellow colour with an expressive, exotic, ripe fruit nose and a well-balanced, rich, mineral, passion fruit palate. Long finish with marvellous minerality and intensity.
FOOD PAIRING
Ideal with appetisers or light fish but very enjoyable on its own.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
This is an excellent wine from a small, quality-focused domaine.
2015 Chateau Nouret
Regular price £22.50 Save £-22.50A 21-hectare estate purchased by the current owners in 2012. Extensive investment in the winemaking facilities and vineyards has seen considerable improvements in the quality of the wines produced. An estate on the rise.
TASTING NOTES
Blackcurrant, blueberry, toast and leather, with a fresh, accessible palate and impressive structure. 12 months in oak, 30% of which is new oak, providing additional complexity and a plush refined mouthfeel.
FOOD PAIRING
Try it with a juicy burger or beef stroganoff.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The more exposed terroir of Bas Medoc ('lower' Medoc) receives a greater amount of Atlantic weather than appellations further up the Gironde estuary; successful viticulture in this mild, humid climate is often very dependent on vintage-conditions. The warm 2015 vintage, excellent throughout Bordeaux, provided ideal conditions for this wine.

TASTING NOTES
Having aged gracefully in used barrique barrels, this Pinot Noir radiates character. It presents a blackberry hue in the glass and evokes memories of a joyful evening by the campfire with friends and freshly toasted bread. The palate unfolds with dark forest fruits, coupled with a smooth finish and delicate dark chocolate – offering an experience that's both intense and refreshing. It can be enjoyed in summer, slightly chilled, for the ultimate pleasure.
FOOD PAIRING
This versatile Pinot Noir pairs beautifully with a range of dishes. Consider serving it with a duck breast with a blackberry and red wine sauce to enhance its dark fruit notes or with a beetroot and goat cheese tart for a delightful contrast. It also complements hearty mushroom risotto or a rich dark chocolate and raspberry tart. Enjoy it slightly chilled during summer barbecues alongside grilled vegetables and smoky tofu skewers for a vegan-friendly option.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Contrary to popular belief, German Pinot Noirs offer a much more decadent fruit character than their French counterparts and almost always offer superb value for exceptional quality.
2016 Chateau Lagrange (Saint Julien), Les Fiefs de Lagrange
Regular price £36.65 Save £-36.65Sold as Baron Saint Julien during the 18th Century when under the ownership of the Baron de Brane, Lagrange dates back to the middle ages, with definitive documentation going back to 1631. In 1983 the estate was purchased by the Japanese Suntory company, which proceeded to invest heavily in renovation and modernisation. A proportion of Petit Verdot was planted in 1988, white grapes were added in 1996; and the wines saw significant improvement, culminating in a number of exceptional vintages beginning in the year 2000. The second wine has been produced since 1985.
TASTING NOTES
Cherry blackcurrant, liquorice and pepper; cool and elegant on the palate, very refined for a second wine.
