TASTING NOTES
Round, ripe apple and peach fruit with a slight touch of yogurt and spice, but very much a wine characterised with freshness. Brilliant value for easy drinking white Burgundy.
FOOD PAIRING
Chicken and root vegetables, and delicately flavoured cheeses.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The warm 2018 vintage produced fruity whites that are fresh and charming in their youth.
2022 Reva, Langhe Sauvignon
Regular price £24.45 Save £-24.45ABOUT THE WINE
The Réva winery in Monforte d'Alba dates back to 1867, but its modern era began in 2013, under the ownership of Miroslav Lekes from the Czech Republic. He appointed Gianluca Colombo as oenologist, and has worked tirelessly to perfect the wines produced on the small 7.5-hectare estate, while also seeking to improve sustainability. All the vineyards are cultivated organically and the estate is run by a group of young professionals who value both tradition and innovation, marrying the use of modern technology with established winemaking techniques. Their goal is to produce wines of excellence that bring into sharp focus the defining characteristics of each grape variety they grow - using such methods as long maceration; low temperature fermentation; the use of indigenous yeasts and gentle ageing in wooden casks.
TASTING NOTES
Bright yellow in colour. On the nose grapefruit, passion fruit, white peach, white flowers and herbs. A bold, lively and fresh palate with crisp notes of citrus and sage followed by a fine length and a flinty, mineral finish.
FOOD PAIRING
Excellent as an aperitif, perhaps with some light charcuterie or soft cheese. A classic match with grilled white fish 'et fines herbes' or shellfish linguine as well as vibrant green salads, grilled summer vegetables and wild garlic pesto.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Réva has fused traditional practices with modern winemaking techniques; the estate is receiving ever more international recognition. One to watch!
2018 Domaine des Masques, Chardonnay Cuvee Exception
Regular price £24.40 Save £-24.40An olive-grove since the time of the ancient Gauls, the plateau near Aix-en-Provence upon which Le Domaine des Masques rests was settled by the Knights Templar of the Order of Provence in the Middle Ages. Vines were first planted in 1992, and in 2003 the estate was bought by Carl and Sophie Mestdagh. The vineyards are tended according to organic principles, although the estate has not sought certification. With duties in the cellar overseen by the famous Rhône winemaker, Yves Cuilleron, the estate is in excellent hands, and producing exceptional wines.
TASTING NOTES
Barrel-fermentation and regular batonnage (lees-stirring) gives this wine great weight and complexity; bright citrus fruit and white blossom aromas are balanced by a buttery brioche character. The finish is supple and complex, with a hint of wood-spice.
FOOD PAIRING
A good wine for a roast chicken, or fish in creamy sauces.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
The region has a long history of growing medicinal plants; and has always been a haven for healers, herbalists and 'sorcerers'; 'masco' in the Provençal dialect, which have given the estate its name.
2022 Charles Deloire Pouilly Fume
Regular price £23.80 Save £-23.80ABOUT THE WINE
The vineyards of Deloire are spread out over the slopes bordering the right bank of the Loire. The rich limestone soil is particularly well-suited to vineyards, and an ideal south-western exposure ensures a perfect ripeness, while exposing the vineyards to the winds blowing up the valley from the Atlantic, which convey the classic 'gin-flint' minerality to the wines of Pouilly-Fumé.
TASTING NOTES
Citrus and soft, sweet gooseberry aromas, with an odd hint of blackcurrant. A crisp, mineral wine with a complex yet genteel palate and a long lingering aftertaste. The mineral edge of Pouilly-Fumé serves only to add freshness to this exceedingly enjoyable Sauvignon blanc.
FOOD PAIRING
Very much an aperitif wine - there is sufficient minerality for white fish, but this is best enjoyed as a refreshing treat on a warm day.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Pouilly-Fumé tends to exhibit a more bracing character than its neighbour Sancerre; in this wine, however, that edge has been toned down to create a more subtle, palate-pleasing experience.
Also available in 2020 Half Bottle
2022 Les Vignes de Tracey, Pouilly Fume
Regular price £23.60 Save £-23.60ABOUT THE WINE
A brand produced by the co-operative Caves des Pouilly-sur-Loire, who receive and vinify the harvests of independent growers from throughout the region.
TASTING NOTES
The signature smokey chalkiness is evident from the get-go, as the tart green limes, green apple and gooseberries take over to reveal a racy and fresh palate. A great example of Loire Valley Sauvignon Blanc.
FOOD PAIRING
Baked ratatouille with goat's cheese and oysters Rockefeller.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Co-operative producers in both Pouilly-Fumé and Sancerre play an important role in maintaining the high standards of these appellations, setting the bar for quality and consistency.
Also available in 2017 Half Bottle

TASTING NOTES
Pale yellow colour with an expressive, exotic, ripe fruit nose and a well-balanced, rich, mineral, passion fruit palate. Long finish with marvellous minerality and intensity.

2020 Domaine Philippe Charmond Macon-Vergisson 'Sur la Roche'
Regular price £21.50 Save £-21.50Winemaking has been a tradition in the Charmond family for three generations, starting in 1950 with only few acres. Today, Philippe Charmond owns and cultivates 8ha in the villages of "Vergisson", Davayé and Prissé. This terroir of the region is ideal for grape growing, with vines situated on south-east-facing slopes to catch the sun. This Macon-Vergisson is vinified 70% in stainless steel vats and 30% in oak barrels; annual production is only 3000 bottles.
TASTING NOTES
The colour is a lustrous pale gold. A subtle nose mixes toasty aromas with dried fruits and white flowers and a refreshingly maritime minerality. On the palate the wine is rich and ripe yet retaining a freshness and an underlying gentle salinity. Notes of freshly churned butter to finish with creamy undertones of fresh hazelnut.
FOOD PAIRING
Pair with finger-food like mozzarella sticks or falafel. Also a great match with white fish.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
Astonishingly good value, with beautiful complexity and a long, graceful finish.
2021 Capanna, Moscadello di Montalcino
Regular price £21.10 Save £-21.10The Capanna farm, owned by the Cencioni family since 1957, is situated in the Montosoli area, to the north of Montalcino. It was founded by Giuseppe Cencioni and his sons, Benito and Franco, and was one of the first estates to form part of the Brunello di Montalcino appellation. The family still manages both viticulture and winemaking on the estate. Their approach is very classic, with structured, powerful reds and intense, complex whites in a traditional, sweet style.
TASTING NOTES
Bright, floral aromas, full of ripe fruit. Apricot, raisin and white peach characterise the subtly off-dry, beautifully balanced palate. Elegant and complex, an excellent example of the style.
FOOD PAIRING
Good with soft cheese or delicate pastries; nothing too sweet, as the wine should always be sweeter than the dish.
FRIARWOOD SAYS
An unusual wine, given the fame of, and demand for, the red Brunello wines from this region; white vineyards are often replanted to Sangiovese, making wines like this increasingly rare, especially on export markets like the UK.
2021 Tar & Roses, Pinot Grigio Central Victoria
Regular price £20.60 Save £-20.60Born into a grape-growing family, Don Lewis spent 32 years working for the Mitchelton winery in Heathcote, where he forged an enduring partnership with Narelle King. In 2004 Don left Mitchelton to work as a consultant, most notably in Priorat, Spain. His time in Europe cultivated his fascination with the wines of Italy and Spain, and in 2006 he and Narelle set up Tar and Roses in order to show how these varietals could be grown in the diverse terroirs of Central Victoria.
TASTING NOTES
Sourced from three main vineyards providing delightful cool-climate, fresh peach and pear flavours, with hints of tropical fruit flavours. The wine sees a short period of skin-contact, giving it a delicate pink hue and a subtle, spicy edge. A complex yet soft and easy drinking wine.
FOOD PAIRING
Great with calamari, or with nutty salads – a wonderful alternative to rose…
FRIARWOOD SAYS
A million miles from the dull, flavourless standard of most Pinot Grigio wines, this is a delightfully balanced, superbly enjoyable expression of this grape variety.
2021 Cave de Ribeauville, Riesling Collection Vendanges Manuelles
Regular price £20.30 Save £-20.30Created in 1895 by wine-growers from the town of Ribeauvillé, the Cave de Ribeauvillé - the oldest such cooperative in France - is something of a pioneer in Alsace. The wine retains just enough residual sugar to balance the bracing acidity and provide a very pleasant drinking experience.
FOOD PAIRING
Beautiful with seafood, appetisers with crudités and canapé; or on its own, paired with friends on a warm summer day.

2022 Totara, Premium Sauvignon Blanc
Regular price £20.30 Save £-20.30The Totara winery, based in Marlborough, is named after a New Zealand native tree revered by Maori and European settlers for its strength and durability. Their vineyards stretch from the stony alluvial soils of Marlborough's Wairau plains and Awatere valley to the climatic extremes of Central Otago's Gibbston Valley and Cromwell Basin. This diversity enables Alan Peters-Oswald, who joined the Totara Wines team as a winemaker in 2010, to capture the best characteristics of these spectacular regions and produce wines that are true reflections of their terroir.
TASTING NOTES
Clean, fruity aromas typical of New Zealand Sauvignon: lime, green apple, gooseberry, pink grapefruit, mango and passionfruit. This complexity carries through to a bright, well-defined palate, aromatic and refreshing: medium body, juicy acidity and a flavoursome finish with a hint of zesty herbaceous notes.

This wine would be perfect as an aperitif, with salads, fresh goats' cheese, feta, Asian-style seafood dishes, Thai green curry, and lightly smoked salmon or fish and chips.
