White Mulled Wine: A Cozy Winter Warmer
As we settle into the colder months, there's nothing quite as comforting as a warming mug of mulled wine. While the classic red mulled wine has its place in our hearts, a white mulled wine brings a fresh, citrusy twist to this beloved winter tradition. Whether you're entertaining friends or enjoying a quiet evening at home, this light and aromatic variation is the perfect pick-me-up for January and February’s chilly evenings.
A Winter Tradition with a Twist
Mulled wine, known as Glühwein in Germany or Vin Chaud in France, has long been a winter staple across Europe. While traditionally made with red wine, white mulled wine offers a refreshing alternative that feels just right for the post-holiday season. Its versatility allows you to customise the flavour, creating a drink that’s as unique as your palate.
Choosing the Perfect Wine
When crafting white mulled wine, the base wine is key. Opt for a dry white wine with bright fruit notes—Chenin Blanc, Sauvignon Blanc, or an unoaked Chardonnay work beautifully. These wines provide a vibrant canvas for the spices and citrus to shine. There's no need to splurge on a pricey bottle, as the added ingredients will enhance and transform the flavour.
White Mulled Wine Recipe
Ingredients:
- 2 (75 cl) bottles of dry white wine. We recommend:
- 2023 Saxenburg Guinea Fowl Chenin Blanc
- 2023 Domaine Philippe Charmond Macon-Village
- 2022 Charles Deloire Pouilly Fume
- 2 oranges, sliced into rounds
- ½ cup brandy (optional but delightful)
- ½ cup honey or sugar (adjust to taste)
- 16 whole cloves
- 4 cinnamon sticks
- 4 star anise
- Optional garnishes: orange slices, cinnamon sticks, star anise
Instructions:
- In a non-aluminum saucepan, combine all the ingredients.
- Heat gently over medium heat until just below a simmer—avoid boiling to preserve the delicate flavours and alcohol content.
- Reduce the heat to low and let the mixture infuse for at least 15 minutes (longer for a stronger flavour).
- Strain and serve warm, garnished with your choice of citrus slices or spices.
Pro Tip: Use a cheesecloth to bundle the spices and citrus for easy removal and minimal cleanup.

Plus, its bright golden hue is a cheerful nod to the promise of longer days ahead.
A Sustainable Sip
January and February often inspire a focus on sustainability and conscious choices. White mulled wine is a fantastic way to make the most of that half-finished bottle from last weekend or an affordable wine that deserves a creative twist.
