Bordeaux Wine Month: Celebrate with Friarwood

As the leaves begin to turn and the air gets crisper, we’re excited to announce our participation in Bordeaux Wine Month, a celebration of one of the world’s most renowned wine regions. This September, Friarwood Wines & Spirits is thrilled to bring the rich heritage and exceptional quality of Bordeaux wines to the forefront, with a special focus on our carefully curated collection.

Featured Wines: A Bordeaux Showcase

Throughout the month, we’ll be highlighting our entire Bordeaux Collection, with a special emphasis on four standout reds and one exquisite white. These wines have been selected to showcase the diversity and excellence that Bordeaux is known for:

  1. 2016 Lucas, Grand Lucas Prestige
Chateau Lucas, established in 1876 in the heart of the Lussac-Saint-Emilion Appellation, has been owned by the Vauthier Family for generations. For over 20 years, Frederic Vauthier has expertly managed the estate, blending traditional family expertise with modern viticulture techniques. The vineyard spans more than 20 hectares, with only 6 hectares dedicated to producing the Grand de Lucas Cuvee Prestige. This wine offers a very aromatic bouquet, combining fruity notes of raspberry and blackcurrant with jammy plum and vanilla. Its velvety tannins, balanced mouthfeel, and long finish make it a grand wine that will age beautifully. Perfect for pairing with red meat, lamb, pork stew, or hard cheeses like Comte or Beaufort, this exceptional vintage is both accessible now and capable of extended ageing.

  2. 2015 Chateau Nouret
This 21-hectare estate, acquired by its current owners in 2012, has seen significant improvements in wine quality due to extensive investments in winemaking facilities and vineyards, making it an estate on the rise. The wine offers flavours of blackcurrant, blueberry, toast and leather, with a fresh, accessible palate and impressive structure. Aged for 12 months in oak, 30% of which is new, it boasts additional complexity and a refined mouthfeel. Ideal with a juicy burger or beef stroganoff, this wine benefits from the more exposed terroir of Bas Medoc, where the warm 2015 vintage provided perfect conditions for successful viticulture.

  3. 2016 Saint Georges (Saint Emilion)
Saint Georges Saint-Emilion, located in the heart of Bordeaux, sits on a 45-hectare vineyard that dominates the Saint Georges Saint-Emilion appellation, nestled between Saint Emilion, Montagne, and Pomerol. Known for its generous character, full-bodied flavour, rich bouquet, and excellent aging potential, this wine ranks among the finest in Bordeaux. It retains some of the fruity complexity of its youth while evolving into a spicy, toasted bouquet with floral notes. Elegantly balanced, with well-developed tannins and harmonious floral and toasted elements, it pairs beautifully with richly flavoured dishes and red meats, best served at 16°C. This wine offers nice complexity and is perfect for savouring with food.

  4. 2014 Chateau Berliquet
Berliquet, one of the oldest vineyards in Saint-Emilion, dates back to 1794 and spans 9 hectares on the prestigious limestone plateau, neighbouring Chateau Canon and Chateau Magdelaine. Initially made by a local co-operative, the wine has been vinified and matured at the chateau since 1978, leading to significant improvements and earning it the Grand Cru Classe status in 1985. Typically a blend of 67% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Franc, and 8% Cabernet Sauvignon, it offers red and black fruit flavours with notes of fruitcake and roasted herbs. Medium-bodied and fragrant, it pairs beautifully with grilled steak, aubergine pasta, or bacon tartlet. This is an early-drinking Saint-Emilion from a very reliable estate.

  5. 2023 Chateau Vignol, White
The Doublet family has been deeply rooted in Bordeaux's vineyards since the late 18th century, when their chateau was redesigned to resemble a Louisiana mansion. The property, once owned by the philosopher Montesquieu, was believed by him to produce wine that opened his mind. This refreshing, crisp dry white offers aromas of apple, pear, and melon, with pronounced green apple and pear flavours on the palate, and a hint of matcha tea on the finish. It pairs wonderfully with creamy dishes, spicy chicken, and grilled white fish, making it a fine example of an affordable white Bordeaux.
