ABOUT THE WINE
Château Clos Fourtet is a St. Emilion 1er Grand Cru Classé property located just outside the entrance to the town. It is distinguished by its beautiful ivy-covered manor house and some of the most extensive underground cellars in the region. Clos Fourtet has had several owners over the years and underwent a mini-renaissance under the stewardship of the Lurtons in the latter half of the last century. Pierre Lurton was the winemaker who really established the property`s reputation as one of the finest on the St. Martin plateau. He left to become winemaker at Cheval Blanc and was replaced by Daniel Alard. In January 2001, Clos Fourtet was bought by Paris businessman Phillipe Cuvelier.
TASTING NOTES
The blend of 2006 consists of 80% Merlot, 10% Cabernet Sauvignon & 10% Cabernet Franc. Despite 2006 being one of the ‘elegance over power’ vintages, this Fourtet proves it otherwise by demonstrating respectable power and intensity. This is perhaps thanks to the deep limestone plateau that side of St Emilion is known for.
Rounded and succulent notes of dark plums, bramble berries & preserved dark cherries accompany the warm, but an integrated oak blanket of vanilla, cedar and dark chocolate. At its peak drinking window as of 2022 and will stay there for another 5-6 years.
FOOD PAIRING
Pair with charcoal-grilled pork belly and braised beef stew with root vegetables.
