ABOUT THE WINE

Saxenburg Estate, located in the Polkadraai Hills of Stellenbosch, has been under the stewardship of the Bührer family since 1989. What began as a humble revival of a historic homestead has evolved into one of South Africa’s most respected wineries, now led by second-generation custodians Fiona and Vincent Bührer. With a commitment to highlighting the region’s unique terroir, Saxenburg crafts wines that are thoughtful, expressive, and approachable — with the Guinea Fowl range offering outstanding value without compromising quality.

TASTING NOTES

The 2020 Guinea Fowl Red is a Bordeaux-style blend of 42% Cabernet Sauvignon, 21% Malbec, 19% Cabernet Franc, and 18% Merlot. It opens with rich aromas of blackcurrant, plum, and crushed blueberries, layered with subtle notes of roasted coffee and dark chocolate. On the palate, it’s full-bodied yet elegant, with a dense but finely grained tannin structure and excellent balance. A vibrant New World red wine that maintains poise and refinement.

FOOD PAIRING

Perfect with South African biltong, grilled venison, or a chargrilled T-bone steak. Its dark fruit and structured tannins also pair well with lamb chops, smoky barbecue, or rich mushroom dishes.
