FRIARWOOD SAYS
"The 2018 Connétable Talbot is a stellar second wine from the esteemed Château Talbot, offering charm, depth, and remarkable ageing potential."

ABOUT THE WINE
Château Talbot is steeped in history, named after Connétable John Talbot, a British soldier who perished in the Battle of Castillon in 1453. Since 1917, the Cordier family has nurtured this fourth-growth estate, transforming it into one of the Médoc’s most revered properties. Spanning 102 hectares of prime Saint-Julien vineyards, it is among the largest and most consistent estates in Bordeaux.

The 2018 vintage was characterised by a warm growing season, which produced intensely flavoured, concentrated grapes. Connétable Talbot, the château’s second wine, is crafted from 30-year-old vines and showcases a blend of 54% Merlot and 46% Cabernet Sauvignon. The wine underwent vinification in stainless steel tanks and matured for 15 months in French oak barrels, with 15% new oak contributing subtle spice and structure.

TASTING NOTES
The 2018 Connétable Talbot is medium to full-bodied with an enticing nose of ripe blackcurrants, plums, and red cherries, accented by notes of tobacco leaf, cedar, and a touch of graphite. On the palate, it delivers a rich core of dark fruit, wrapped in velvety tannins and balanced by vibrant acidity. A mineral undertone adds depth, while a long, smoky finish leaves a lasting impression. This vintage offers impressive structure and ageing potential but is equally charming in its early years.

FOOD PAIRING
This wine’s robust structure pairs beautifully with rich, flavourful dishes. Serve it alongside roast lamb with rosemary, beef stews, or game meats. It also complements a selection of cured meats and hard cheeses, making it an excellent choice for entertaining or special occasions.
