FRIARWOOD SAYS
"The 2018 Château Batailley is a Pauillac classic that perfectly combines elegance, complexity, and structure. A superb expression of the vintage, this wine is drinking beautifully now but has the potential to evolve gracefully over the next several decades."

ABOUT THE WINE
Château Batailley, the flagship estate of Borie-Manoux and the Castéja family, is steeped in history as one of the oldest wineries in the Médoc. Its name, derived from the French word for "battle" ("bataille"), commemorates a historic Hundred Years’ War conflict that took place on the estate’s grounds. The 2018 vintage reflects the estate's commitment to innovation and tradition, with a focus on achieving purity and finesse while remaining true to its Pauillac roots. Grapes are hand-harvested, fully de-stemmed, and vinified in stainless steel tanks. Malolactic fermentation occurs partly in tanks and partly in barrels, followed by 16 months of aging in 60% new French oak, imparting depth and complexity to the wine.

TASTING NOTES
The 2018 Château Batailley is a blend of power and refinement. It opens with enticing aromas of blackcurrants, raspberries, and plum, mingling with hints of cedar, cigar box, and sweet spice. The palate is medium to full-bodied, revealing layers of dark fruit, graphite, and a touch of vanilla. Polished tannins provide a firm structure, while a vibrant acidity ensures balance and a long, lingering finish with notes of crushed violets and earthy nuances.

FOOD PAIRING
This vintage pairs beautifully with classic Bordeaux accompaniments such as roast lamb with rosemary, braised duck breast, or grilled dry-aged beef cuts. It also shines alongside hearty dishes like wild mushroom risotto or braised veal shank. Aged hard cheeses like Manchego or Gruyère bring out the wine’s depth and complexity.
